Surface Detail started life as part of a commission with choreographer Julia Cheng - Orlando Warrior - which was first performed at South Band in London as part of the 2017 China Changing Festival. A version of the introduction can be found on the compilation by Woodford Halse Tapes Undulating Waters 3, of which mark Barton of The Sunday Experience wrote 'utilising the faintest of brush strokes, it’s as if Simon McCorry has the ability to control the very curve onto which the moon and earth forge their celestial courtship'. The track has two sections - a plaintive elegiac introduction that moves into a rhythmic groove in 7/8 that utilises cello thumps and small percussion. Recorded in one take with no overdubs.
